Words and Terms, You Should Be Familiar with When Riding Your Mountain Cycle

All set to ride your mountain cycle and experience the thrill of the tough terrain? Why not get familiar with some of the terms and words commonly used by mountain cyclists as well? Read on to know all about the common terminology which will serve you well on a mountain biking trip:

.Berm: It refers to a curve which has a raised support on the outside to enable riders to turn easily at high speed.

.Pump: The action of pushing the bike onwards with great effort without pedaling, often leading to increased speed.

.Manual: The action of lifting the front wheel off the trail and riding only on the rear wheel is called manual. This action too does not require pedaling but shifting of the bodyweight of the rider to the rear to keep the bike upright. This does require rigorous practice.

.Bail: This refers to the action of jumping off one’s cycle when crashing in a bid to avoid more serious injury. Quite literally, the riders bails from the bike and in the process, saves himself from getting seriously injured in case of a crash.

.Dropped: When riding in a group, if one member is left to languish behind, he/she has been dropped.

.Fat Bike: A fat bike is quite literally a bike with fat tires, i.e. bikes whose wheels are at least 3 inches wider than the standard size. These bikes are quite good for riding the tougher terrains and absorb shock very well on the trail.

.Hardtail: As the term itself suggests, hardtail refers to a hard or no-suspension rear in the bike. This is one of the two types of suspensions available in MTB bikes.

.Off-camber: This refers to a section of a trail, usually a curve, where the outside edge is lower than the inside edge. Maneuvering the off-camber curve requires much practice and skill.

.Poach: To ride a trail, usually on private property, without permission and/or without paying the admission fee and illegally is known as poaching and is against mountain biking etiquette.

.Switchback: An uphill climb on a hill which is extremely steep and usually cannot be traversed straight up.
